Link Library

NOTICE:I am currently working on a book on plugin development, to be published in August 2012.
Therefore, I will not have as much time available to support questions/feature requests on my plugins as I would normally have. I recommend that you read through all comments here, through the forum on the wordpress.org and through the FAQ before asking questions. I will try to answer a few questions on occasions but I cannot guarantee at what frequency this will be. Thank you for your understanding.
This plugin is used to be able to create a page on your web site that will contain a list of all of the link categories that you have defined inside of the Links section of the WordPress administration, along with all links defined in these categories. The Admin Panel for Link Library allows you to define up to 5 different sets of settings to have pages with lists of links looking quite different from each other. Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions or report issues on either of these plugins.

Yeah. I see that now. (I’m really tired I guess. Been up all night working on this thing.)

Any fix on the horizon for the favicons that don’t pull from the site and won’t display a generic icon? The broken link icon is as unprofessional as can be.

Examples of sites that do this:

I am very busy with a large project and won’t have time to perform fixes in the next 6 months or so. Sorry.

I’m moving my WordPress site from one host to another. Is there a way to export my links? I’ve already successfully exported and imported settings. Thanks!

    • Yannick Lefebvre November 6, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Hi Mike, If you have created a full SQL backup of your site, you should be fine. The links are stored in the WordPress links table and in the Link Library specific links_extrainfo table. Restore these tables, along with the rest of your WordPress data on the new host and you should be fine.

I am not able to find the Category ID in my links on the admin panel. Does anyone know where you find that?

Is there a plug-in or something I need to install?

  • Darren December 9, 2011 at 8:54 am

    Hi,

Thanks for the great plugin. I love you for it, actually I love all of the developers that make free software. Thanks again.

I have one problem with the new release. I went ahead and did a silly thing by adding my own geo coding at http://zipscape.com/add-a-listing/ , so now it’ll be difficult to upgrade.

Would you consider adding geo coding as an option? I can send you what I’ve done if you want that as a starting point.

    Cheers.

    • Yannick Lefebvre January 7, 2012 at 7:55 pm

Hi Darren, Just to check, when you say Geo-Coding, you mean street, address and zip code. Anything else? Did you already modify the code to Link Library to handle this? I could look at incorporating the code within the main plugin. I can’t promise exactly when since I am working on a long-term project until this summer. But if it’s largely written, that could make it easier.

I install this plugin and activated it, but how do I add a links page? Maybe this is obvious, but I just dont see it. There are no new pages on my site. I dont see any obvious option in the settings that will make one of the link library become a wordpress page. What am I missing?

  • Jay Martin December 31, 2011 at 3:15 am

Thanks for this amazing plugin. I will donate to you soon as I am not planning to use it on 2 separate sites.

My question is: What is the permalinks setting for?

    • Yannick Lefebvre December 31, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Hi Jay, Glad to hear that Link Library is working well for your needs. The permalinks setting is used to be able to show one category at a time and have clean URLs for these libraries. For example, http://site.com/links/music, http://site.com/links/movies, etc… Each category name would go at the end of the URL. Let me know if this helps.

    Hello!

How can user change their entries? I could not find a possibility for it, that can be done it!

    Thanks

    Marcus

    • Yannick Lefebvre January 2, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Hi Marcus, It is not currently possible for users who submit links to make changes to them down the road. That being said, I have already implemented such functionality in another one of my plugins, so this is something that is feasible. I will not be able to look at implementing such functionality until next summer, since I am involved in a very time-consuming project at the moment. I have added it to my feature request list.

  • Jennifer January 6, 2012 at 2:50 pm

    Hi Yannick,

Link Library is quite a nice plug-in that does almost all that I need. I have two small issues though:

    1) when I have a both the category option, [link-library-cats settings=1], and the search option, [link-library-search settings=1] on the same page, running the search will cause the category list chooser to disappear. This is reproduced on your own page here: http://yannickcorner.nayanna.biz/freeware-database-ajax-version/ Is there a way of leaving the category list alone when the search is run?

    2) submitting a new link works but throws a MySQL error:
WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'l.link_url = 'http://google.com'' at line 1] l.link_url = ‘http://google.com’

I am using WP3.3.1 and Link Library 5.3.2

    Thanks,
    Jen

    • Yannick Lefebvre January 7, 2012 at 9:00 am

Hi Jennifer, I fixed the SQL error in recent versions (5.4 and higher), so please try upgrading for this issue. Actually, I re-wrote most of the link submission code in the last week. As for your other question, just check the box ‘Display categories with search results’ to see the category list with your search results. Let me know if you encounter any other issues.

      • Jennifer January 9, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Hi Yannick. Thanks for the quick reply .

I hadn’t upgraded because the plugin wasn’t yet marked compatible with WP3.3.1. Since I’ve been burned on this point by other plugins, I was waiting. Happily, I can report that LL5.4.3 works just fine with WP3.3.1. (I’m sure you’re not surprised!)

Regarding, my other question: it appears that the presense of a ‘Display by Category’ drop down causes Search results to also display by category. Optimally, ‘Search’ would produce a unique list of links displayed by relevance, and ‘Display by Category’ would produce a categorized list and the choice of display would be unrelated to the presense/absense of the other form control. I’ll describe my use case so you’ll know why I’d like this behaviour.

Most of my links are in multiple categories. You might say I’m using categories as tags rather than as bins. So when I do a word search, if the Links page is set to ‘display as categories’ I get the same links several times. To avoid this, I could turn the ‘display as categories’ off, but then I have to make a second page where that functionality is available. Ideally, I would have 1 Links page divided into 3 tabs (jQuery-UI tabs). Tab1 would have the ‘Display by Category’ drop down and its results. Tab2 would have the ‘Search’ form and its (uncategorized) results. The 2 result sets would not affect each other. Tab3 would have the ‘Suggest a Link’ form.

Currently, I’ve managed 2 tabs, one with both link display methods and the other with the suggest form. You can see what I’ve got here: http://ashguild.ca/links/?searchll=wool

Anything you can suggest would be most appreciated.

        Thanks,
        Jen

Thank you first for the excellent plugin. After that I had been looking for awhile. :)
At the latest update 5.4.3 I have a question. Which individual files have been changed in the update?
I ask because I have the file link library.php have changed something and the fear that everything will be overwritten during an update. Is it also possible to insert the modified code manually?

If my English to be a little difficult to read … I have it translated from German as “Google Translator”.

    regards
    Harry

    • Yannick Lefebvre January 9, 2012 at 11:58 am

Hi Harry, You can use the WordPress plugins trac tool to run a diff between the version that you are using and the latest version. This would show you all of the changes that I made so that you can re-apply them to your modified version of Link Library. http://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/log/link-library/trunk

What type of changes did you make? Would they be changes that would benefit a larger audience? If so, I could potentially add them to the main plugin.
