Interesting tidbits from the web, best freeware list and other news

After a busy summer, we are already at the beginning of the fall. That means that Évelyne is going to be turning one pretty soon. It’s scary how quickly she’s growing. But at the same time, it’s a lot of fun to see her going through every step.

Andrée started taking a Photoshop class at Concordia University on Saturdays so I am taking care of Évelyne for a good chunk of the day. It’s fun to get to spend time with her and see the new things she learned how to do during the week :)

Work is always busy for me as usual. I am currently preparing course materials to support the release of a new version of our software. It is interesting to learn new things all the time. After all that is done, the new TV season is starting. I have started watching a french TV show called Au nom de la loi on Radio-Canada that is pretty good. At the same time, the sci-fi shows that we watch regularly (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica) are taking a break until January so we won’t be overloaded by too much TV.

  • Once again, I got tired of my weblog’s design and went searching online for a new theme and just fell in love with this one when I saw it. Most of the site is now working under the new theme, except the Recipe Book. Kudos to Erik Poehler for the great theme with nice artwork and a very slick look. It was very easy for me to drop in my blue bridge picture in the header and tailor the site to my needs.

If you notice any problems with the site, drop me a note by clicking on my name at the bottom of the page.

  • I’ve become a fan of the Stargate universe over the last two years, first by reviewing the season DVD box sets, then by watching every episode of the great Stargate: Atlantis. I was then intrigued when I read about a third “series”, Stargate: Horizon. Horizon is a fan-created series that is set seven years after SG-1. They assume that the Stargate project has eventually gone public on Earth and that people are starting to get used to the thought that aliens might be walking among them. Of course, there needs to be bad guys for a series to work so there is a new race of aliens that is menacing Earth in SGH. Instead of filming episodes, the Horizon project currently publishes scripts for their episodes on their site. I will be reading through these episodes where I get a chance.

  • My quest to only run Open Source freeware or standard freeware applications on my computer is going well, but there are still a few applications for which I have not found a replacement. In a recent web search, I recently found a good image viewer to replace ACDSee. I mainly use a tool like this to view images quickly and to rotate the images from my digital camera. Like many of you, I use Picasa to store and view my pictures, but find it very annoying that changes made in Picasa don’t change the actual files on the hard drive.

The replacement that I found is called FastStone viewer and is a freeware application. It contains all of the features that I was looking for and is very fast to startup and load images. I have added this tool to my list of freeware tools.
