Archive for March, 2005

After seeing some of the designs in the 2005 Wordpress theme competition, I was inspired to do some changes on my own weblog. So you’ll see the site now sports a new color palette and some new CSS elements.

  • I have been using Wordpress as the engine behind my web log for almost a year now and find it’s been getting better all the time. However, there was one little piece of functionality that was missing for my needs, a way to create a link page from the data I entered in the links section of the admin area. I wanted to display links with large descriptions, a list of all link categories at the top of the page and a way to replace the description with the notes field since the notes field is longer and is contents are not displayed in the links admin page.

After looking around, I decided to create my own plugin to fill in the functionality that I needed. Version 0.1 of the Link Library for Wordpress 1.5 is now available on the official Wordpress plugin site. To see the plugin in action, take a look at the newly revamped links section on the site.

If there is anything you would like to see that is not there, feel free to drop me a note.

  • In reading some news about the uncertain future of Star Trek Enterprise, which could eventually get picked up by another network, I found that quite a few groups of people have been making amateur Star Trek episodes that they are distributing on the web. Most are a bit funny to look at, but they’re still enjoyable to see what people with a passion can do. Check out these sites:

    • Star Trek: Hidden Frontier: Already in its sixth season with six to nine episodes per season. The time line is around the time of Star Trek Voyager.
    • Star Trek: New Voyages: This series has produced two episodes that focus on the continuation of Captain Kirk’s adventures after the end of the three TV series.
    • Star Trek: The section 31 files: Audio adventures of members of Section 31.
    • Starship Exeter: Also set in the Kirk era but focusing on a different crew. A first episode has been released with two on the way.

If you’re a Star Trek fan, you’ll probably find some of these a lot of fun to watch.

  • The technology section of the Radio-Canada.ca web site has a nice little article on UnePorte.net, the french DVD review web site that I write for. It’s not that long but does talk about the depth of our reviews and the fact that the staff is all volunteers who dedicate a lot of time to get good reviews out there.

Speaking of DVD reviews, my latest one has been posted this morning for The Grid, a TV mini-series about a group of investigation agency agents working together to prevent a new wave of terrorism.

  • J. Scott Campbell has announced on his official site that the first glimpse that we will be able to get of Wildsiderz, his latest creation, will be in June 2005. The comic will show a bunch of heroes wearing holographic suits that give them the power of animals. Neat concept. And Campbell’s art is just the nicest out there. I’ve been a bit fan of his since the Gen13 days. Now, my biggest conflict is whether I should get the issues as they come out or only once they are released as a trade paperback.

The preview issue, #0, will be followed by the actual series a bit later, similar to the approach taken for Danger Girl when it first came out.
